BURNING PERMITS

PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE OBTAINING YOUR BURNING PERMIT.

You can be fined up to $5,000 or more for illegal open burning in North Carolina.

Things you may NOT burn:

  • Garbage, Paper and Cardboard
  • Tires and other rubber products
  • Building materials, including lumber and wood scraps
  • Wire, plastics and synthetic materials
  • Asphalt shingles and heavy oils
  • Paints, household and agricultural chemicals


  • Things you may burn:

  • Yard trimmings (excluding logs and stumps)
  • Campfires
  • Outdoor barbeques
  • Bonfires for festive occasions


  • Burning is done between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The proper time to burn is : (1) following a rain when the wind is calm; (2) after grasses are green and hardwood leaves are mature.

    IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CALL 250-6777 AFTER 8AM EACH DAY TO DETERMINE IF OPEN BURNING IS ALLOWED

    OPEN BURNING MAY BE CHANGED AT ANY TIME. BECAUSE YOU HAVE A PERMIT DOES NOT GAURANTEE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BURN.
